FAQS

  • Don’t let the “pre” fool you. Prediabetes is a serious health condition. People with prediabetes have blood sugar that’s higher than normal but not high enough yet for a diabetes diagnosis. Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. By enrolling in the FREE Dallas County Diabetes Prevention Program, you can stop Type 2 diabetes in its tracks.

  • Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that impairs the body’s ability to process glucose. Without healthy lifestyle changes, prediabetes can develop into Type 2 diabetes within five years. And the results can be devastating. With Type 2 diabetes, your body can't keep blood sugar at normal levels and doesn't use insulin well. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults (but more and more in children, teens, and young adults). You may not notice any symptoms, so it’s important to get your blood sugar tested if you’re at risk.

  • Over time, high blood sugar damages many body systems, especially nerves and blood vessels. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputation. Recent research has also shown a connection between diabetes and dementia, hearing loss, and some forms of cancer. Diabetes increases the risk of early death, and diabetes-related complications can lower quality of life.

  • If you have any of the following diabetes symptoms, see your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested:

    • Urinate (pee) a lot, often at night.

    • Are very thirsty.

    • Lose weight without trying.

    • Are very hungry.

    • Have blurry vision.

    • Have numb or tingling hands or feet.

    • Feel very tired.

    • Have very dry skin.

    • Have sores that heal slowly.

    • Have more infections than usual.

Myth: No one in my family has diabetes, so I won't get the disease.

Having a parent or sibling with diabetes increases your risk for getting Type 2 diabetes. But many people with diabetes have no close family members with diabetes. By enrolling in the FREE Dallas County Diabetes Prevention Program, you can feel confident that you’re taking steps to take charge of your health.
